DEADLIFTS

What is a Deadlift?

The deadlift is a weight training exercise with a loaded barbell. The barbell is lifted off the ground up to your hips, with your torso at right angles to the floor, and then put down again. The deadlift is one of three power-lifting exercises, along with the Squat and Bench Press.

What is a Deadlift good for?

Deadlifts use most of your lower body muscles and therefore increase your overall lower body strength. In particular they strengthen and give more definition to your back, glutes, and hamstrings. The movement required to perform a deadlift tests and enhance the strength and durability of your whole body, leading to better posture.

How do I perform a Deadlift?

Stand with the middle of your feet under the barbell, and with your feet shoulder-width apart. Bend over and grab the bar with a shoulder-width grip. Bend your knees until your shins touch the bar. Lift your chest up and straighten your lower back. Take a deep breath, tense the muscles in your body, hold your breath, and stand up with the weight.

Safety first!

Your lower back MUST stay straight. Rounding your lower back or spine during a deadlift is dangerous and could lead to serious injury to your muscles or spinal discs. ALWAYS master your technique at easy, low weights before challenging yourself with a heavier weight.
